Before standardized time zones, each city had its own local time based on the position of the sun. This worked fine for small communities, but as railroads and global communication expanded, it became chaotic. To fix this, Sir Sandford Fleming, a Canadian engineer, proposed a worldwide system of time zones in 1879. Eventually, the Greenwich Meridian was chosen as the Prime Meridian (0° longitude) in 1884, setting the foundation for today’s global time system.

Time zones are based on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is set using atomic clocks for extreme accuracy. As you move east, time moves forward (+1, +2, etc.), and as you move west, time moves backward (-1, -2, etc.).
However, not all time zones follow the exact one-hour rule. Some regions use 30-minute or even 45-minute offsets, like:

  • India (UTC+5:30)

  • Nepal (UTC+5:45)

  • Newfoundland, Canada (UTC-3:30)

To complicate things further, many countries adjust their clocks for Daylight Saving Time (DST), moving an hour ahead in warmer months to maximize daylight hours. But not every country participates—places like China, Japan, and most of Africa stay on standard time year-round.
